48 Hours in Lakeway, Texas

What do you do in Austin, if you don’t want to keep it weird? Located 16 miles west of Austin, is a town called Lakeway. Lakeway, Texas provides the perfect daytrip or weekend getaway for travelers. Lakeway is easy access between Austin and Texas Wine Country. When driving to Lakeway, one feels the relief of escaping the concrete jungles and influx of people in small spaces. The city lies along scenic Lake Travis with access to many water activities. The main attraction is the Lakeway Marina that provides entertainment for both locals and visitors. There are other attractions like golfing and many hiking trails. Through the advice from locals, my accommodation and foodie tour consisted of:

Where To Stay

Lakeway Resort and Spa

Lakeway Resort and Spa is right off the scenic Lake Travis. It was first opened as the Lakeway Inn, in 1963, with less than 50 rooms for occupancy. Currently, it has been renovated to become a 160+ rooms full service resort. Some of the resort amenities are a fitness center, onsite restaurant, lobby bar, full-service spa, a Kid Zone, three swimming pools, and a whirlpool. I didn’t feel the need to leave the resort for entertainment or food. I was satisfied with their lobby bar and their Lake Travis Restaurant. There are outside restaurants that delivered. The room options were either a lake or property view.

Double Room with Lake Travis View

My room view of the lake was relaxing. I opened the balcony door to enjoy the lake breeze and enjoyed a book. The customer service at the resort was excellent. I broke a law by buying wine and forgot the corkscrew. The front desk had one for me to borrow. Being a solo traveler, I felt safe to roam into the neighborhood.

Where To Eat

Café Lago

This is a coffeehouse that serves breakfast and lunch. This cozy restaurant is located at Lakeway Village Square Plaza in a residential area. Many locals told me that this is the place to go for breakfast. The atmosphere was relaxing and a homely feel. There were eclectic accent pieces and art throughout the café. Café Lago has a great selection of coffees to choose from. I order a regular coffee, Café Mocha, and then their signature Café

Garden Bagel with cream cheese, sprouts, tomato, and red onion

Lago. All was great tasting without the strong bitterness. Since I was pushing on time, I order the Garden Bagel. The bagel was warm with crispiness on the outside and moist on the inside. If I had a bigger stomach, I would have order another one.

Creamistry Lakeway

This ice cream parlor uses liquid nitrogen to flash freeze your sweet tooth cravings. I am a gelato, custard, and ice cream lover. This was the first time I tried an establishment that uses this technique for their creations. It was like being in a science lab and seeing your dairy (or non-diary) Frankenstein come to life. Creamisty uses quality products with organic options available. I left with a smile on my face and so did many others.

Santa Catarina Mexican Restaurant

For a great Mexican food and margaritas place in town, I was told this is the restaurant. Santa Catarina Restaurant offers food with fresh ingredients and some authentic flair. This informal location is in a strip mall plaza, so parking can get crowded. I went during the transition of happy hour and dinner. The place was packed. Like most restaurant, you are served chips and salsa (which was flavorful with little spice). They serve various tacos, salads, enchiladas, desserts, and house specials. The appetizers I ordered came out seasoned with a good presentation. The ceviche was my favorite for staying out on a warm day.

Sundancer Grill

So I wanted to have a small bite to eat and a few drinks with a marina view. Sundancer Grill is located at the Sail & Ski Yacht Club on Lake Travis. This establishment offers indoor and outdoor seating. While visiting, most of the patrons were locals with few travelers. The employees treating everyone like they were extended family and was serve quickly. They have many food options. I tried the Carlos ’n Charlie’s Famous Chicken Changitas (version of mini chicken chimichangas and special sauce) and the Spicy Island Wings ( jerk spiced and grilled, served with sweet guava BBQ sauce). They both had great flavor but will order extra spicy next time. Most people come here for the cocktails and boat drinks. My Dark &Stormy and Ultimate Margaritas cocktails were crafted well and delicious.
